Top-seeded Middlebury advanced to the NESCAC Championship match with a 5-2 win over fourth-seeded Wesleyan (13-6) in a match played at the Wallach Tennis Center hosted by Bates. The Panthers (15-2) will take on second-seeded Bowdoin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon for the crown. The contest will be played indoors at the Portland Racquet and Fitness Center in anticipation of rainy weather in the area.
Middlebury secured a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of the doubles matches. Wesleyan scored the opening point when the tandem of Joachim Samson and Sam Rudovsky posted an 8-3 win over Middlebury's William de Quant and Kyle Schlanger at #3. In the second flight, the Panthers got on the board when Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell earned an 8-2 victory against Michael Liu and Steven Chen. In the closest match at #1, Middlebury's Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani gave the Panthers a narrow advantage when the duo edged Zacko Brint and Greg Lyon by an 8-6 count.
During singles play, the Cardinals picked up the first point to knot the match at 2-2. At #5, Cameron Daniels defeated Derbani by scores of 6-4, 6-1. Schlanger put the hosts ahead for good, recording a 7-5, 6-2 win at #6 over Jake Roberts.
At the fourth spot, de Quant gave Middlebury a 4-2 lead with a come-from-behind three-set triumph (1-6, 6-3, 6-4) over Samson, while Farrell also came from a set down and clinched the match at #1 with a 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 win against Chen.
In the other two matches that went unfinished, Smolyar had split the first two sets with Chen and led 3-2 in the third at #2, while Campbell and Tiago Eusebio also each won a set in the third flight and Campbell was ahead 1-0 in the decisive set.
