Playing in the NCAA Doubles Tournament Quarterfinal on Friday afternoon, Middlebury men's tennis players Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani came back from down a set for the second-consecutive day and advanced to the semifinals following a three-set victory. Earlier in the singles' draw, Noah Farrell lost in straight sets during his quarterfinal contest. Matches are being held at Kalamazoo's Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
In the back-and-forth opening set, Emory's Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding edged the Panther duo by a 6-4 score. Campbell and Derbani, seeded fourth in the draw, fought back in the second set to even the match via a 6-3 victory. The Panther duo advanced to the semifinal with a 6-4 victory in the decisive set.
The Middlebury duo will play the top-seeded Case Western Reserve tandem of CJ Krimbill and Louis Stuerke on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Spartan team knocked off Skyler Butts and Daniel Morkovine from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in straight sets.
In the singles competition, Farrell the tournament's #1 overall seed, fell to #7 seed Branden Metzler of Kalamazoo behind a boisterous hometown crowd by identical 6-3, 6-3 scores. Metzler also won his semifinal match and will play for the title tomorrow.
Farrell, the 2015 USTA/ITA Small College Singles National Champion and 2016 NESCAC Player of the Year, ends his season with a 33-5 record. Over his first two years as a Panther, Farrell has tallied a combined singles mark of 57-14 against the #1 and #2 players in the opposing lineup.
