Four Middlebury men's tennis players participated in day one of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournaments on Thursday, highlighted by Noah Farrell's two wins in singles and the doubles duo of Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani advancing to the quarterfinal round. Matches are being held at both Western Michigan's Sorensen Courts and Kalamazoo's Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
In the singles competition, Farrell started the tournament as the #1 overall seed. He eased past Brady Anderson of Coe by set scores of 6-2 and 6-4. In the round of 16, Farrell cruised over Salisbury's Eric Spangler 6-1, 6-2. He will play seventh-seeded Branden Metzler of Kalamazoo on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the quarterfinals.
Also competing for the Panthers as an individual was Ari Smolyar who dropped his opening-round match. Carnegie Mellon's Abhishek Alla took the first set of the match 6-3, but Smolyar rebounded, taking the second set 6-4. Alla grabbed the win with a 6-3 decisive set. Smolyar concludes his senior season as the northeast region's eighth-ranked player with a record of 20-8 and 50-13 over the last two seasons.
In a bracket of 16 tandems, Campbell and Derbani needed three sets to get past Redlands' Joey Dulle and Jake Ly. Dulle and Ly won the first set 6-3, but the fourth-seeded Panther duo tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-4 victory in set number two. Looking for a spot in the quarterfinals, Campbell and Derbani trailed 4-2 in the final set, but won the final four games en route to a 6-4 triumph.
They will play Emory's Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding on Friday at 3:00 p.m., as the Eagles' team knocked off the Gustavus Adolphus pair of Mohanad Al Houni and Andres Saenz in straight sets (6-2, 6-1).
