Middlebury advanced to the NCAA Men's Tennis Semifinals for the 10th time in program history with a 5-1 win over sixth-ranked Washington-St. Louis (Mo.) in a quarterfinal match played on Western Michigan's Sorensen Courts in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The third-ranked Panthers (19-2) advance to the semifinals for third-consecutive year and will play #8 Chicago, who defeated #2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-2, on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Kalamazoo's Stowe Tennis Center. The Bears finish their season at 18-6.
Monday's NCAA Quarterfinal was the third meeting in the program's histories in a series which began in 2003. The teams met in the NCAA Tournament in 2003 during the quarterfinal round, a 4-0 victory for the Panthers. During Middlebury's national title run in 2010, the Panthers edged the Bears by a 5-4 score in the semifinals, and Monday's win marked the third-straight triumph for the Panthers.
Middlebury jumped out to a 2-1 advantage after doubles play on Monday. The top pair of Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani grabbed the first point via an 8-3 victory over Jason Haugen and Konrad Kozlowski. The #3 Panther team of William de Quant and Kyle Schlanger doubled the lead with an 8-4 victory over Washington-St. Louis' Jeremy Bush and Tyler Kratky. The Bears cut the Panther lead in half when Josh Cogan and Johnny Wu edged Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell by a 9-8 (6) score.
In singles action, the Panthers won the first three matches to finish in straight sets. At #4, de Quant posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Haugen. In the #1 slot, Farrell put the Panthers up 4-1 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over John Carswell. Campbell clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #3 against Kratky.
In the other three matches that went unfinished, Smolyar and Wu were tied at 6-6 in the first set, while Derbani lost the first set to Bush and the two were tied 3-3 in the second at #5. At #6, Schlanger won the opening set 6-3 and was up 5-3 and 30-0 against Jake Klein when the match was decided.
