Middlebury Downs St. John Fisher, Advances to NCAA Regional Final

Middlebury advanced to the NCAA Regional Final after a 12-9 victory over #18 St. John Fisher (17-4) in a game played on Kohn Field. The fifth-ranked Panthers (19-1) will take on Gettysburg in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The meeting was the first between the schools and extended Middlebury's winning streak to eight games.

The Cardinals opened the scoring 2:12 into the contest when Jamie Wallace cut to the middle of the field from the wing for a 1-0 lead.

Middlebury tied the game 40 seconds later on a tally by Hollis Perticone and a goal by Alli Sciarretta put the hosts in front, 2-1.

St. John Fisher tied the game at 2-2 when Cori Holbrook found the back of the net, but Megan Griffin scored back-to-back goals for the Panthers to put her team up, 4-2. The first came on a free-position attempt, while the second was on a quick-stick feed from Mary O'Connell who was set up behind the net.

Mackenzie LeVan pulled the Cardinals to within one at 4-3 at the 17:08 mark, converting a pass from behind the cage by Sierra Badger.

Middlebury closed out the half on a seven-goal run, taking a sizable 11-3 lead into the break. Sciarretta started the run after taking a feed from Perticone and found the back of the net. After a free-position tally from Bridget Instrum, the Panthers scored immediately after the draw when Chrissy Ritter found O'Connell racing down the field. Sciarretta and Laurel Pascal followed with goals, while Instrum scored on a bounce shot from a tough angle with 1:26 left in the first half.

Katie Mandigo made six first-half saves for the Panthers, including three on free-position attempts.

St. John Fisher battled back in the second half, as Jordan Johnson scored and Badger added a free-position goal to make it an 11-5 game. Instrum put the Panthers on the board in the second half with 17:07 remaining.

The Cardinals continued to cut into the Panther lead, as Chrissy Cook started a run with a low shot after cutting to the middle. Carly Sullivan scored on a quick-stick feed from Johnson in front, before Johnson scored a goal of her own at the 6:02 mark to cut the Panther lead to 12-8. Molly Rourke added a late goal for the Cardinals to make it a 12-9 final.

Instrum and Sciarretta each finished with three goals, with two apiece from Griffin and O'Connell. Ritter finished with four draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while O'Connell picked up five ground balls in the game. Mandigo ended the contest with nine saves, including a stellar stop with 21:16 remaining in the second half.

Johnson led St. John Fisher with a pair of goals, while seven other players registered solo tallies. Holbrook finished with six draws, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Hayley Peets allowed 11 goals and made three saves in 28:34, while Molly Maguire stopped five shots and allowed just one goal in 31:26.
