The Middlebury men's tennis team concluded the regular-season portion of its schedule with a 7-2 home triumph Sunday over #20 Skidmore (12-4) indoors in the Nelson Recreational Center. The third-ranked Panthers (14-2) close the season on a seven-match winning streak, and return to the courts next weekend at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Bates.
Middlebury secured a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of the doubles matches. The Panther tandem of Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani were the first to finish with an 8-1 decision over Kai Yuen Leung and Nick Tong at #1. In the second flight, Middlebury doubled its lead when Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell earned an 8-3 victory against Skidmore's Kit Sanderson and Jonah Epstein. In the closest match at #3, Skidmore's Lucas Pickering and Steven Koulouris edged Kyle Schlanger and William de Quant by a 9-8 (6) count.
In singles play, the Panthers picked up the first two points to pull ahead, 4-1. At #4, de Quant put the hosts up by two points when he won in the fourth spot by scores of 6-3, 6-4 over Pickering, while Campbell recorded a straight-set win (6-2, 6-3) in the third position over Sanderson.
Skidmore picked up its lone point in singles action when Leung posted a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Farrell in a battle of regionally-ranked foes at #1.
Smolyar clinched the match at #2 with a three-set victory over Koulouris (4-6, 6-2, 6-1), while Derbani made the score 6-2 in favor of the Panthers with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #5 versus Tong. Schlanger concluded the match, tallying a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ted Berkowitz in the sixth spot.
