The third-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team opened the final weekend of the regular season with a 9-0 NESCAC home victory Sunday over Trinity (8,6, 3-5) on the Proctor Tennis Courts. The Panthers (13-2, 9-0), who have won six-straight matches, return to the court Sunday with the home finale against #20 Skidmore.
Middlebury raced out to a quick 3-0 lead after doubles. The second Panther tandem of Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell secured the first point against the Bantams with an 8-0 victory over Carlos Ferreyros and Camden Smith. In the third spot, Kyle Schlanger and William de Quant gave the Panthers their second point with an 8-5 win over William Boyd and Rutendo Matingo, while the team of Hamid Derbani and Palmer Campbell posted an 8-5 triumph in the top flight over Rex Glickman and Ford Traff to complete the sweep.
In singles play, the Panthers were victorious in straight sets during five of the six matches. At #5, Derbani gave the visitors a 4-0 lead via a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Boyd, while Schlanger clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Ferreyros in the sixth flight.
At the third spot, Campbell tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win over Matingo, while de Quant gave the Panthers a 7-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at #4 over Aaron Segel. Farrell kept things rolling with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Glickman at #1, while Smolyar completed the scoring with a 6-0, 3-6, 10-6 win over Traff in the second flight.
