The Middlebury men's tennis team rattled off its fourth-consecutive victory with a 7-2 NESCAC home triumph Saturday over #14 Amherst (14-7, 3-4) on Proctor Tennis Courts. The fourth-ranked Panthers (11-2, 7-0) return to the courts Sunday on the road with a 9:00 a.m. match at Connecticut College.
Middlebury secured a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of the doubles matches. The Panther tandem of William de Quant and Kyle Schlanger were the first to finish with an 8-1 decision over Jon Heidenberg and Andrew Yaraghi at #3. In the top flight, Amherst tied the match at 1-1 when Aaron Revzin and Michael Solimano earned an 8-2 victory against Noah Farrell and Ari Smolyar. In the closest match which took place at #2, Middlebury's Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani edged Ben Fife and Zach Bessette by an 8-6 count.
In singles play, the Panthers were victorious in five of the six matches. Farrell put the hosts ahead 3-1 when he won in the top spot by scores of 6-4, 6-0 over Solimano, while Campbell recorded a straight-set win (6-0, 7-5) in the third position over Fife.
Schlanger was the next to finish, clinching the match with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at #6 against Andrew Arnaboldi, while Derbani made the score 6-2 in favor of the Panthers with a 6-4, 7-5 win at #5 versus Jesse Levitin.
The final pair of matches needed three sets to decide a victor. Amherst claimed its second point when Revzin posted a 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3 triumph over de Quant at #4, while Smolyar rounded out the scoring for Middlebury with a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 come-from-behind victory in the second slot over Bessette.
