Box Score Middlebury closed the first half on a 7-0 run on its way to a 14-4 win over #11 Hamilton (9-3, 5-4) Sunday afternoon on Kohn Field. The second-ranked Panthers (11-1, 7-1) will play their third game in four days on Tuesday when they host Union at 5:30 p.m., while the Continentals host Ithaca on the same day at 5:00 p.m.
With the game tied at 1-1, Alli Sciarretta scored her second goal of the game when she took a feed from Hollis Perticone, who had won the draw and raced downfield. Middlebury's Laurel Pascal followed before Darby Philbrick scored her second of the afternoon for the Continentals on a free position, making it a 3-2 game.
Sciarretta struck again on a free-position pass from Bridget Instrum at the 18:35 mark, with Margaret Gabriel answering for Hamilton despite being a player down.
Leading 4-3, Middlebury went on its decisive run, which extended to 10-straight goals into the second half. Bea Eppler scored on a dish from Perticone and Instrum converted a free position to begin the run. Pascal scored the next two goals, the first a give-and-go with Sciarretta and the second on a pass down low from Megan Griffin to make it an 8-3 game.
The run continued when Instrum netted the next three tallies to put her team on top 11-3 at the break. Her first of the three came on a spin move, while her second saw her cut across the crease before finding the back of the net.
Griffin opened the second half with a pair of goals to extend the lead to 13-3 with 22:50 remaining. Her initial goal came from a tough angle driving from the side of the net, while the second marker was on a feed from Claire Russell, her first assist of the season.
Chrissy Ritter scored Middlebury's final goal at the 20:15 mark, as the Continentals closed the scoring on a free position goal from Jackie Cuddy with 8:30 remaining.
Instrum's four goals led all scorers, to go along with three draw controls and one helper. Pascal finished with three goals one assist, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Griffin earned two goals and two assists, Sciarretta finished with three first-half goals and an assist, while Perticone had two assists, four draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Katie Mandigo made some big second-half saves, finishing the afternoon with six stops.
Philbrick's two goals led Hamilton, Morgan Fletcher had five ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Casey File earned three draw controls. Hannah Burrall made a pair of saves and allowed nine goals in 23:16, while Hannah Rubin earned three stops with five goals allowed in 36:44.
The Panther defense forced 28 turnovers in the game, won 12-19 draws and held a 25-14 shots advantage.
