Fueled by a sweep during singles play on Sunday, the third-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team tallied a 7-2 NESCAC road victory over #17 Tufts. The Panthers (9-2, 5-0) have a week off from action before hosting second-ranked Bowdoin next Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Tufts (8-4, 3-2) secured a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of three exciting doubles matches. The Jumbo tandem of Nik Telkedzhiev and Griffin Brockman were the first to finish with a 9-7 decision over Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani at #2. In the third flight, Middlebury tied the match at 1-1 when William de Quant and Kyle Schlanger earned an 8-5 victory against Jay Glickman and Zain Ali. In the tightest match, Tufts' Nick Cary and Rohan Gupte edged Middlebury's Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell by a 9-8 (12-10) count in the #1 spot.
In singles play, the Panthers were victorious in all six matches. Campbell knotted the score at 2-2 won he won by default while ahead by scores of 6-0, 5-0 at #3 against Telkedzhiev, while Derbani put the visitors ahead for good with a straight-set win (6-2, 6-3) in the fifth position over Rob Jacobson.
Farrell was the next to finish, tallying a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at #1 against Gupte, while de Quant clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at #4 versus Ali. Needing three sets for the final two points, Timo van der Geest earned a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Danny Coran at #6, while Smolyar recorded a 6-7 (14), 6-1, 6-0 victory in the second slot over Glickman.
