The third-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team saw its winning streak grow to six in dual matches this spring with a 9-0 victory Monday at Biola in the Biola Tennis Center. The Panthers (6-0) look to keep their winning ways going when they return to the courts on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. against #8 Pomona-Pitzer.
Against the Eagles (9-9), Middlebury surrendered a total of three games during doubles play. The Panther tandem of Timo van der Geest and William de Quant picked up the team's initial point with an 8-0 victory at #3 over David Garcia and Michael Vartuli, while the #2 duo of Hamid Derbani and Palmer Campbell were next to finish with an 8-2 win against Philip Westwood and Joe Turnquist. At #1, the Panther team of Noah Farrell and Ari Smolyar gave the visitors a 3-0 lead headed to singles with an 8-2 victory over Lucas Lee and Luke Mountain.
In singles action, the Panthers had little trouble with all six victories coming in straight sets. Cole Sutton was the first off the courts with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Andrew Greenfield at #6, while Kyle Schlanger clinched the match in the fourth spot with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Turnquist. Smolyar picked up a win at #1 by 6-0, 6-2 scores against Lee, while de Quant cruised in the third flight over Mountain (6-1, 6-0).
The Panthers' eighth point came from Campbell at #2 (6-2, 6-3) over Westwood, while Peter Martin completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Garcia.
