Middlebury continued its spring trip through southern California, blanking Lewis & Clark 9-0 in a men's tennis match played at Whittier's Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. The third-ranked Panthers remained perfect for the spring at 5-0 and return to the courts on Monday at 7:00 p.m. against Biola.
The doubles tandem of Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell started things off notching the team's first point with an 8-4 victory at #1 over Lewis & Clark's Rim Trouerbach and Keane Hindle. The #2 flight of Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani won 8-3 over Brenden Barrows and Gordon Barrows, while the third doubles team of William de Quant and Timo van der Geest needed a tiebreaker before securing for the team's third point over Harrison Collins and Kevin Ross, 9-8 (8).
In singles action, the Panthers produced points four through eight with straight-set wins over the Pioneers (6-7). At #4, de Quant was the first off the courts with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Daniel Hahm, while van der Geest clinched the match in the sixth spot with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Michael Brewer. Smolyar picked up a win at #2 by 6-2, 6-0 scores against G. Barrows, while Derbani cruised in the fifth flight over B. Barrows.
The Panthers' eighth point came from Campbell at #3 (7-5, 6-0) over Collins, while Farrell completed the sweep and ran his record this season to 20-2 with a 6-0, 5-7, 10-6 victory against Raed Attia.
