Panthers Drop 13-8 Decision to Carthage

Box Score

The Middlebury baseball team collected a season-high 16 hits, but it wasn't enough as the Carthage used a six-run second inning en route 13-8 win over the Panthers in Tucson, Arizona on Sunday. Middlebury (2-3) is back on the field tomorrow with a pair of games against Westminster (Mo.) at 2:00 p.m. and Gustavus Adolpus at 5:30 p.m.

Middlebury took the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first, as Jake Turtel doubled to left and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Lock for the game's first run. The lead grew to 2-0, when Spencer Tonies singled to left and Max Araya scored from third.

The Panthers added another run in the top of the second when Drew Coash walked and eventually touched home plate on a wild pitch. That run made it a 3-0 game.

Carthage (7-7) struck for six runs in its half of the second, all of them unearned. After the Panthers retired the first two batters of the inning, an error extended the inning and the Red Men had nine-straight batters reach base to take a 6-3 lead.

The Red Men extended their lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the third, but Middlebury came right back with a pair in the fourth. Turtel reached base on a Carthage error and Lock got aboard two batters later with a base hit up the middle. Both players scored on a double to the gap in right by John Luke, making it an 8-5 contest.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Red Men countered with three more runs and added another in the fifth to push the difference to 12-5.

The Panthers plated a run in the top of the sixth, when Sam Graf reached on an error and scored on a base hit to center field by Lock.

A run by Carthage in sixth made it 13-6, Middlebury kept battling with two runs in the eighth. The first came on a base hit to left by Tonies to drive in Araya, while John Tipps plated the second with a run-scoring single to right. Lock scored on the base hit by Tipps, making it a 13-8 final.

Tonies had an impressive collegiate debut for Middlebury, going 4-5 with a pair of RBI. Luke drove in a game-high three runs with a 3-5 performance at the plate with a double, while Araya went 2-4 with two runs scored and a walk.

Robert Erickson suffered the loss for the Panthers, despite not allowing an earned run, while Joe MacDonald had a solid showing out of the bullpen, allowing one run on three hits in three innings of work.

Drew Korosic and John Burkiewicz each finished with three hits for the Red Men and Brandon Hrdlicka earned the win in relief, not allowing an earned run in 4.1 innings.
