O'Connell's Career Day Leads #3 Middlebury Past #18 Bowdoin

Box Score

Mary O'Connell established a new single-game program record with 13 points on nine goals and four assists, leading third-ranked Middlebury (6-0, 3-0) to a 20-9 home win over #18 Bowdoin (3-4, 0-4) on Kohn Field. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday at Dickinson with a start time of 4:00 p.m., while the Polar Bears host Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The 13 points for O'Connell surpasses 12-point outputs from Kristin Hanley '03 (4/12/03) and Kim Griffith '93 (4/20/93), while her nine goals rank her second in the program's record books for a single game, placing her behind Griffith's 10.

O'Connell had a part in Middlebury's first seven goals of the game, as the hosts ran out to a 5-0 lead with 4:04 elapsed. She opened the scoring 1:32 into the contest, receiving a feed from Laurel Pascal in the offensive zone following a failed Bowdoin clear. O'Connell tallied the assist on the next three goals scored by Bridget Instrum, Hollis Perticone and Pascal. O'Connell capped the quick five-goal run with her second of the game on a high shot into the upper-right corner of the goal at 25:56.

A little more than four minutes later, Emma Beecher got the visitors in the scoreboard when she sprinted in from the right and sent a bouncing shot past Middlebury starting goalie Madeleine Kinker. Megan Griffin put the hosts ahead by five (6-1) on a bouncing shot from the left with 21:07 remaining via O'Connell's fourth helper of the stretch, but Beecher tallied her second of the game just 30 seconds later.

The Panthers recorded the next four goals over a span of 7:45 for a 10-2 advantage with 15:48 left in the opening half. O'Connell had three tallies sandwiched around Instrum's second goal of the day.

Bowdoin's Megan O'Connor pulled the visitors to within six (10-4) on a free-position goal at 12:53 and an unassisted score 31 seconds later on a high shot into the right corner over the shoulder of Kinker.

Middlebury closed the half scoring five of the final seven goals, including three scores from O'Connell, two of them on free-position shots, and a pair by Chrissy Ritter for a 15-6 halftime advantage.

O'Connor started the second half for the Polar Bears with her third goal of the game on a quick-stick score via a pass from Lindsay Picard, pulling the visitors to within eight (15-7). The Panthers tallied the next five goals for a 20-7 lead, with two each from Instrum and Pascal. O'Connell's record-setting 13th point came on a goal with 25:30 left where she sliced down the middle of the Bowdoin defense after an assist from Griffin.

Bowdoin's Hannah Hirschfeld and Margaret Savage rounded out the scoring with goals at 9:23 and 3:50 left.

O'Connell's single-game record gives her 16 goals and a NESCAC-best 21 assists this spring for 37 points. Instrum finished with four goals and an assist, while Pascal also had five points on three goals and two helpers. Ritter finished with two goals and a team-best three caused turnovers, while owning a game-high five draw controls to go with a goal and a pair of helpers.

O'Connor paced the Polar Bears with five points on three goals and two assists, while Beecher tacked on three scores and Picard finished with two assists. Annie Glenn concluded the contest with a team-high four draw controls.

Kinker (2-0) got the start in the crease for the Panthers, tallying three saves in the first half, while Kate Furber played the final half with five stops. Kayli Weiss (3-4) produced six saves in the opening stanza for Bowdoin, while Erin Morrissey logged the final 30 minutes with a save. Middlebury held a 29-20 advantage in shots and a narrow 17-15 edge in ground balls.
