Box Score Bowdoin's Shawn Daly scored 50 seconds into overtime as the Polar Bears posted a 9-8 NESCAC win over the Middlebury men's lacrosse team on Saturday at Ryan Field. The ninth-ranked Panthers (4-3, 2-2) face a tough test on Wednesday when they head to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, facing third-ranked RIT at 7:00 p.m., while the Polar Bears (5-1, 3-1) host Babson on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. This was the fifth-straight Middlebury game decided by two goals or less, with three of them going to overtime.
Bowdoin opened the scoring on a man-up situation with 8:39 left in the first quarter when Brett Kujala tallied on a feed from Brandon Lee. The Panthers responded with a pair of goals coming 1:09 apart later in the frame. Sean Carroll scored with an even four minutes showing on the clock and Henry Riehl put Middlebury in front 2-1 moments later. The Polar Bears regained the lead with the final two goals of the first quarter, with the latter of those coming with two seconds on the clock.
Middlebury used a strong second quarter to reclaim the lead, scoring the first four goals. Jon Broome tied the game 3-3 at the 1:49 mark and Riehl put the Panthers in front less than two minutes later. Jack Cleary made it a 5-3 lead with his first goal of the game. Less than a minute later, Tim Giarrusso pushed the difference to 6-3, as his goal came at the 6:01 mark.
Bowdoin added a goal before the half as Middlebury held a 6-4 advantage at the break.
The Polar Bears accounted for all four goals in the third quarter, as the hosts jumped back into the lead. Kujala opened the scoring and Matthew Crowell tied the game at 6-6 with 6:23 showing in the clock. Kujala put Bowdoin in front with 2:25 left in the quarter and Clayton Wright scored with one tick on the scoreboard as the hosts led 8-6 with 15 minutes left to play.
Cleary pulled the Panthers to within 8-7 with 1:13 expired in the final quarter before they tied the game in the final minute. After Parker Lawlor scooped up a ground ball to give Middlebury possession, Giarrusso potted his second marker of the game with 42 seconds left in regulation. The Polar Bears were also whistled for a penalty following the goal, but they won the ensuring faceoff and held the ball until the clock expired sending the game into overtime.
Bowdoin maintained possession at the start of the four-minute overtime and Alex Osgood found Daly on the back post for the game-winning score.
Cleary, Riehl and Giarrusso each scored twice for the Panthers, while Broome scored once and set up two others. Broome's two assists give him 79 for his career, which ties him for fifth in the career records with Mike Giordano '13. John Jackson won 10-17 of his faceoffs and collected a game-best six ground balls.
Kujala led all players with four goals and five points and Daly chipped in with three goals and one helper.
Will Ernst made six saves for Middlebury, while Peter Mumford had 15 for Bowdoin as the Panthers held a 39-27 advantage in shots. The Polar Bears went 2-5 on extra-man opportunities, while Middlebury was unsuccessful in three attempts.
