Middlebury Edges Wesleyan 9-8 in Overtime

Box Score

Middlebury's Jack Gould scored a man-up goal 50 seconds into overtime as the men's lacrosse team netted a 9-8 road NESCAC win at Wesleyan on Saturday. The contest marked the second-straight overtime game for the Panthers, after going 55 games without needing extra time. Seventh-ranked Middlebury (3-2, 2-1) heads to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game, while the Cardinals (3-2, 1-2) are home the same day at 7:00 p.m. against Clark.

Middlebury scored all three goals in the opening quarter, the first of those coming 2:36 into the game. Cedric Rhodes staked the Panthers out to a 1-0 advantage with an assist from Jon Broome. Broome assisted on the team's second goal, setting up Sean Carroll for the score. That goal came with 5:28 left in the quarter and a tally by Gould with less than two minutes on the clock gave the guests a 3-0 edge after the opening 15 minutes of play.

After Niall Devaney put Wesleyan on the scoreboard 2:12 into the second period, the hosts closed the gap to one 1:30 later as Taylor Ghesquiere found the back of the Panther net.

Middlebury responded with back-to-back goals in a span of 1:08. Joey Zelkowitz picked up the first with an assist from Broome, while Jack Cleary pushed the lead to 5-2 with 3:09 left before the half. The teams traded goals in that time with Harry Stanton getting on the board for Wesleyan and Henry Riehl tallied with 13 seconds left on the clock to send the Panthers in the half with a 6-3 lead.

Each team scored twice in the third quarter, with the Cardinals getting the first two to pull within a goal at 6-5. The Panthers picked up a pair of late goals as Riehl scored with 3:03 left and Gould found the back of the net with 20 seconds.

Wesleyan stormed back in the fourth quarter, scoring all three goals to erase the 8-5 deficit. Stanton tallied all three goals, with the game-tying marker coming with 7:17 left in regulation.

Middlebury's defense came up big in the final minute as the Cardinals were looking for the go-ahead goal. Jack DeFrino caused a turnover and teammate Dylan Fowler quickly collected the ground ball giving the Panthers possession. While Middlebury was executing a successful clear, Wesleyan was flagged for a penalty and gave the Panthers a man-up opportunity with five seconds left in regulation.

Middlebury maintained possession at the start of the four-minute overtime, patiently working the ball on the perimeter, before Gould whipped a shot from 20-yards out from inside the restraining line that got under Cardinal goalie Ted Bergman (9 saves). The game-winning tally came 50 seconds into overtime and with five ticks left on the man-advantage.

Gould led the Panthers with three goals, while Riehl picked up a pair and Broome had a game-high three assists. John Jackson won 65 percent (13-20) of his attempts at the faceoff X and had six ground balls, while Zelkowitz led all players with seven ground balls. Stanton accounted for half of Wesleyan's scoring with a game-high four goals.

Goalie Will Ernst had eight saves to earn the win as Middlebury held a 39-28 advantage in shots. The Panthers went 1-2 in man-up situations and Wesleyan was unsuccessful in its lone opportunity.
