Fueled by a school-record performance from Michael McGean on Saturday evening, Middlebury sits in seventh place following the second day of the 2016 NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship inside the Samuelson-Muir Pool on the campus of Williams College. The Ephs continue to lead the way (1,263.5), while Connecticut College (1,083), Tufts (1,080), Amherst (957) and Bates (665) round out the top five. Bowdoin (589.5) and Middlebury (583.5) are in a tight battle for the sixth and seventh spots.
In the night's first individual final, McGean touched the wall ahead of the field in the 1,000 free, lowering his own school-record time to 9:32.36. McGean was victorious in the event by 4.39 seconds.
Another top-three individual effort came from Stephan Koenigsberger, who finished third in the evening's 100 breaststroke championship final. His evening time of 56.08, and the morning's quickest preliminary time of 56.03, are both are NCAA 'B' cut times.
The 200 medley relay of Alex Smith, Koenigsberger, Bryan Cheuk and Paul Lagasse started things off on the second night with an eighth-place finish in 1:34.77. During the evening's final event, the 4x800 freestyle relay team of Smith, McGean, Brendan Leech and Connor McCormick swam to a ninth-place finish in a time of 7:09.49.
The Panthers conclude the championship Sunday with morning preliminaries scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., and the finals session starting at 5:15 p.m. with the 1,650 freestyle.
