Middlebury sits in sixth place out of 11 teams following the first day of the 2016 NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships held inside the Samuelson-Muir Pool on the campus of Williams College. The host Ephs lead the team standings with 657.5 points, while Connecticut College is second with 545.5 points. Amherst (501), Tufts (491) and Bates (352.5) round out the top five, while the Panthers are right behind with a sixth-place total of 340.5 points.
The Panthers started the evening off with a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay. The quartet of Bryan Cheuk, Paul Lagasse, Jack McLaughlin and Stephan Koenigsberger stopped the clock in 1:24.35.
In the evening's next championship final, Koenigsberger touched the wall in seventh place with a time of 26.12 in the 50 breaststroke.
During the 500 free, Michael McGean tallied a sixth-place effort, finishing the event in 4:39.18.
On the diving board during Friday's one-meter diving final, Will Greene improved upon his morning preliminary score by nearly 20 points, accumulating 411.10 points for a fifth-place finish.
The final event of the initial evening saw the Panther 400 medley relay team of Brendan Leech, Koenigsberger, Alex Smith and Lagasse finish with a time of 3:29.23, good for eighth place.
The Panthers return for day two of the championship Saturday with the morning preliminaries scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., while the finals session will start at 6:00 p.m.
