Plattsburgh State Holds Off Late Charge by Middlebury

Box Score

Plattsburgh State held on for a 2-1 victory over fifth-ranked Middlebury (3-1) to capture the 2016 Panther/Cardinal Classic in Kenyon Arena. The top-ranked Cardinals improve to 9-1 on the season, while the Panthers move to 3-1. Middlebury returns to action next Friday and Saturday with a two-game NESCAC series at #9 Connecticut College.

Plattsburgh State took a 1-0 led just 56 seconds into the game, taking advantage of a turnover. Melissa Sheeran picked up the puck and skated into the zone, before finding Kayla Meneghin in front, who made a quick move to get a shot on an open net. The Cardinals nearly took a 2-0 lead at the 4:50 mark, but Ashley Songin's shot on a two-on-one break hit the crossbar.

Middlebury had apparently tied the game on its power play midway through the period, but a goal was disallowed after it was ruled it had been tipped in by a high stick.

Plattsburgh State took a 2-0 lead midway through the second period with a goal from Sheeran. Meneghin made a nifty pass between her legs behind the net to Songin, before the puck found its way to Sheeran for the goal.

Middlebury goaltender Lin Han kept it a two-goal game with a pair of great saves in the second period. She robbed Karen Hudson with a sliding pad save, before denying a shorthanded breakaway bid by Songin.

The Panthers had a great chance with 2:00 remaining in the period, but Jessica Young was denied on a breakaway on a pad save from Cardinal netminder Camille Leonard.

Middlebury made it a one-goal game 5:51 into the third period with a five-on-three power-play goal. Carly Watson moved the puck from the left side down low to Maddie Winslow, who snapped a quick shot into the top corner of the net at the 5:51 mark.

Plattsburgh State nearly regained a two-goal lead less than a minute later, but Meneghin's breakaway attempt was denied by Han.

Middlebury pulled Han after a timeout with 1:57 remaining, but was unable to net the equalizer.

Middlebury finished with a 25-15 shots advantage in the game, going 1-7 on the power play, while Plattsburgh was 0-2. Leonard made 24 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Han finished with 13 stops for the Panthers.
