Swimming & Diving Teams Begin Second Semester With Wins Over Colby

The Panther swimming and diving teams opened their second semester with convincing road dual meet wins Saturday afternoon against Colby. The women were victorious by a 214-77 score, while the men cruised to a 200-93 victory. Middlebury returns to action Sunday with a dual meet at Bates scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.

During the women's competition, the Panthers won 14 of the 16 events that were contested. The Middlebury quartet of Sarah Bartholomae, Liza MacCowatt, Megan Griffin and Isabel Wyer were victorious in the day's opening event, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:52.38.

Individually, Griffin, Wyer and Alaina Pribis each picked up two event victories in the pool for the Panthers. Griffin won the 50 free in a time of 25.92, while she claimed the 50 fly title in 27.47. Wyer touched the wall first in the 50 back (29.19) and 100 back (1:00.29), while Pribis claimed the event wins in the 500 free (5:22.50) and 1,000 free (11:04.17).

Other event triumphs came from Morgan Burke in the 200 free (1:59.76) and Lily Sawyer in the 100 fly (1:00.55). Additionally, Stephanie Andrews won the 100 free with a time of 56.18, while Grace Stimson notched the win in the 100 individual medley with a mark of 1:03.10.

On the diving board, Elissa DeNunzio was also a double-winner. She won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 216.08 points, while claiming the 3-meter event with a score of 233.95.

In the final event of the meet, the team of Burke, MacCowatt, Catherine Pollack and Andrews won the race to the wall with a time of 1:43.56 in the 200 free relay.

On the men's side, the team nearly matched the women's output with 13 wins in the day's 16 events. The team of Brendan Leech, Stefan Pla, Jack Dowling and Paul Lagasse began the meet with a winning time of 1:41.33 in the 200 medley relay.

Individually, Bryan Cheuk and Michael McGean both earned two event wins. Cheuk won the 50 free (22.57) and the 50 fly (24.82), while McGean posted victories during the 500 free (4:49.69) and 1,000 free (9:53.46).

Event victories were also posted by Justin Cho in the 50 back (25.81), Stephan Koensigberger in the 50 breaststroke (28.37), Dowling during the 100 fly (55.46), Jack McLaughlin in the 100 free (49.14) and Leech in the 100 back (54.23).

Will Greene dove to a pair of triumphs on the diving boards for Middlebury. He posted a winning total of 232.43 points in the 1-meter competition, while accumulating a score of 246.37 during his 3-meter win.

The 200 free relay team of Lagasse, Leech, McLaughlin and Cheuk capped off the meet with a winning mark of 1:30.49.
