Middlebury's Noah Farrell won six matches over the course of three days on his way to capturing the singles title during the 2015 USTA/ITA Men's Tennis Regional Championship hosted by Williams. He is the first Panther since Andy Peters in 2009 to take the singles crown. Farrell, along with the other winners from each regional, advance to the Small College Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina from October 15-18, 2015.
Farrell won the men's singles title, defeating Luke Tercek of Bowdoin, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Farrell trailed 5-2 in the opening set, but battled all the way to force the tiebreaker and eventually record the set and the victory. All six of Farrell's triumphs, who entered the tournament as the third seed, came in straight sets.
On Friday, Farrell defeated Zain Ali of Tufts (6-0, 6-0) and Blake Norton of Nichols (6-0, 6-1). He continued the momentum when he bested Williams' Brian Grodecki (6-4, 6-1) and Jose Raventos (6-2, 7-6 (5)) in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals the following day. He defeated Steven Chen of Wesleyan (6-1, 6-3) in the semifinals before posting the come-from-behind victory in Sunday's final.
Additional Panthers who tallied wins during the event were Ari Smolyar, Allen Jackson, Palmer Campbell, Timo van der Geest and William de Quant. Smolyar, the fourth seed, worked his way through to the quarterfinal round with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Issac Thylen of Babson in the first round. He lost the opening set but came back and defeated Amherst's Zach Bessette (4-6, 6-3, 6-1) in the round of 32, followed by a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Bates' Ben Rosen. In the quarterfinals, Smolyar was edged by Tercek (6-1, 6-4).
In his first two matches, Jackson topped Dhruv Yadav of Wesleyan (6-4, 7-5) and Southern Maine's Tyler Adams (6-3, 6-2). Chen edged past Jackson in three sets (3-6, 6-0, 6-2) in the round of 16. Also getting to the second day was van der Geest. He posted a 6-4, 6-0 win against Springfield's Court Honda and won by default in his next match, but was defeated in three sets by Tufts' Rohan Gupte (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) in the round of 16.
At the bottom of the bracket, de Quant upset the overall #2 seed Carl Reid of Colby via a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory, but fell to MIT's Alex Cauneac by scores of 6-0, 7-6 (4). Campbell earned a straight-set win (6-1, 6-1) over Endicott's Eric Pierce before falling to Tercek (6-3, 6-1) in the round of 32.
In doubles play, the duos of de Quant and Jackson along with Campbell and Smolyar both made it through to the quarterfinal round before bowing out. Smoylar and Campbell, seeded seventh, posted an 8-4 win over Win Smith and Yadav from Wesleyan, followed by an 8-0 triumph against Thylen and Victor Vu from Babson. In the quarterfinals, the Panther pair was edged by Amherst's Ben Fife and Bessette.
The team of de Quant and Jackson breezed by Fernando Pinoargote and Spencer Pinkney of Clark (8-1) as well as MIT's Tyler Barr and Alex Cauneac (8-4). The pair fell in the quarterfinals to Trinity's Rex Glickman and Ford Traff (8-5).
The Panthers hit the courts for competition when they take part in the Wallach Invitational hosted by Bates on October 9-10.
