Box Score

The Middlebury women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end, falling 19-12 to Cortland State (21-1) in an NCAA semifinal game played at PPL Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The game marked the end of a historic career for Middlebury coach Missy Foote, who finishes her 35 years at the helm of the program with a record of 422-114-1, including five NCAA Championships and 17 trips to the final four. The Panthers end their season with a record of 16-4.

Katie Ritter opened the scoring driving to the middle from the left side, netting her 40th of the season at the 26:35 mark. Laurel Pascal scored Middlebury's next two goals in a span of 58 seconds. Her first goal came on a spin move to the middle with a low bouncing shot. The second was a free position on the left side that was partially saved by Jaclyn Beshlian before crossing the goal line. Mary O'Connell made it a 4-0 game at 19:53, scoring on her second attempt after her initial shot had been saved.

Cortland State took possession of the ball for the first time following the goal, as Hannah Elmer scored on a quick-stick shot after a feed from Marilyn Farrell. Elmer struck again just 22 seconds later, converting a free position with a bounce shot from the right side. The Red Dragons were within one when Tara Monaghan scored on a nice feed from Elmer, who was behind the net.

Middlebury answered the three-goal spurt when Ritter converted with 9:55 remaining. Cortland State won the draw and looked to respond quickly, but goalie Katie Mandigo made a nice save on Monaghan to keep it a 5-3 game. The Red Dragons kept up the pressure, scoring twice in 17 seconds to tie the game and force a Middlebury timeout. Ashley Gentile scored both goals for Cortland, putting her season total at 75. The Panthers came out of the timeout with a goal from Pascal, who quickly turned and shot after taking a feed from Megan Griffin.

Trailing 6-5, Cortland State closed the half on a 3-0 run, taking an 8-6 lead into the halftime break. Elmer scored in the middle to start the run, followed by another from Gentile as she quickly turned and shot from the middle after a feed from Emma Hayes-Hurley 38 seconds later. Kristen Ohberg scored a quick-stick goal from Farrell for the final tally of the first 30 minutes. Cortland State had a lengthy possession to end the half, but strong Panther defense and a big save from Mandigo kept it an 8-6 game.

Cortland State held a 17-11 shots advantage at the half, winning 10 of 15 draw controls. After Middlebury won the first four draws of the half, Cortland State controlled 10 of the next 11.

The Red Dragons opened the second half with three goals, extending its run to 6-0. Hayes-Hurley cut through traffic and scored, Monaghan found the net cutting down the middle, as did Gentile.

Middlebury broke a 15:01 scoring drought when Bridget Instrum converted a free position for her 41st goal of the year. Madeleine Kinker came on in relief of Mandigo following the goal.

Cortland State increased its lead to 12-7 with 17:52 left as Gentile scored her fifth of the game on a quick-stick shot after an underhand feed from Ohberg. Following a great save in Instrum by Beshlian, the Red Dragons added to their lead when Nicole Bello scored from point-blank range.

Elmer tallied another score followed by a free position goal from Ohberg to increase the Cortland State lead to 15-7. Middlebury answered when O'Connell found Alli Sciarretta cutting through the middle at 10:24, before Pascal found the back of the net to make it a 15-9 game with 7:59 remaining. The run continued following a timeout as O'Connell found Sciarretta two more times, cutting the lead to 15-11 with 6:37 left.

Hayes-Hurley scored a big goal for Cortland State with 5:29 left on the clock, ending the 4-0 Middlebury run as the Red Dragons followed by winning the draw control. Ohberg scored again before Sciarretta and O'Connell hooked up for the fourth-straight time to cut the lead to 17-12. The Red Dragons added two late goals with Kinker defending on their way to the 19-12 win.
