Middlebury advanced to the NESCAC Championship match with a 5-3 win over Bowdoin (14-5) on Proctor Courts. The Panthers (17-3) will take on fifth-seeded Williams at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning for the crown.
Second-seeded Middlebury jumped out to a 2-1 advantage by taking two of three doubles matches over third-seeded Bowdoin. Panthers Palmer Campbell and Peter Heidrich eased past Luke Trinka and Luke Tercek by a score of 8-3 at #1 singles to start things off. The lead grew to 2-0 when Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell were 8-5 victors over Kyle Wolstencroft and Gil Roddy in the second slot. Bowdoin got on the board at #3 when Noah Bragg and Kyle Wolfe outlasted Chris Frost and William de Quant, 9-8 (8-6).
Bowdoin tied the match at 2-2 in singles play after Roddy defeated Timo van der Geest 6-4, 7-5 at #6 singles. Farrell defeated Bragg at #2 to give the host school a 3-2 lead. Smolyar increased the lead to 4-2 at #1 singles with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win over Trinka. Bowdoin came within one at #4 when Chase Savage earned a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win over Jackson Frons.
Campbell sealed the match for Middlebury in the third slot, topping Wolfe 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. After two tie-breaking sets, de Quant led Tercek 5-2 in the third set when the match was halted.
