Box Score 2 The Middlebury baseball team dropped a pair of games at Bowdoin on Saturday, falling 3-2 in game one and 8-2 in the second contest. The Panthers close out their season on Sunday with a pair of games at Tufts. The Polar Bears move to 16-18 on the year.
The only runs of the series opener were scored in the first and last innings of the game, with the Polar Bears putting up three in the bottom of the first and the Panthers getting on the board with two in the seventh.
Chad Martin tripled to right center to drive in Aaron Rosen and Chris Cameron for the quick 2-0 lead. Marin eventually came around to score on an RBI by Sam Canales who chopped a ball to the first baseman.
Both pitchers dueled six innings on the mound for their respective teams. Erik Jacobsen allowed five hits and as many strikeouts for Bowdoin, matched by Robert Erickson (0-5), who allowed three runs off three hits with five strikeouts.
Ryan Rizzo led off the top of the seventh with a long double to left field, moving to third on a groundout, and eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Trailing 3-1, the Panthers pushed another run across the plate as Dylan Sinnickson cleared the fence with a solo shot. Jon Fraser induced a groundout on the following batter to end the inning and secure Bowdoin's win.
Sinnickson finished with a pair of hits, as did Rizzo for the Panthers.
Bowdoin scored three in the third and three more in the fifth on its way to the 8-2 win in game two. The Polar Bears got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single to right from Tom Wells. Bowdoin added three more runs in the third, beginning with a Jacobsen single to center scoring Cameron. With the runner sitting at second, Aaron Rosen blasted a homer to left field to put two more runs on the board and grab a 4-0 lead.
Jacobsen again drove in Cameron in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single through the right side. Sam Canales added two more to Bowdoin's total, making it 7-0, when he singled to drive in Martin and Jacobsen. The Polar Bears' final run came off a groundout by Stephen Girolamo that pushed Chris Nadeau across the plate in the sixth.
Middlebury got two runs back in the top of the seventh after loading the bases. Jake Turtel drove in Johnny Read to break up the shutout before Sinnickson quickly doubled the Panthers' run tally with an RBI single to right. Bowdoin escaped without any further damage to earn the sweep.
Harry Ridge recorded the win for Bowdoin with six innings of work, allowing two hits with five strikeouts. Tucker Meredith (0-1) started on the mound for Middlebury and worked two innings with four hits and four earned runs allowed. Andrew Corcoran tossed 2.1 innings, while Joe MacDonald threw the final 1.2 innings.
Sinnickson again had two hits in the game, going 4-8 for the day.
