The Panthers (15-3) will meet #12 York, an 8-7 winner over #5 Gettysburg, in an NCAA Quarterfinal game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The 13th-ranked Continentals end their season with a 12-6 mark. Middlebury scored eight of the game's first nine goals and then netted seven of eight tallies in the second half to secure the win. The game was delayed twice by lightning, taking 4:23 to complete.
Hamilton took a 1-0 lead just 13 seconds into the game on a goal from Morgan Fletcher, who won the draw and took it straight to the goal. Middlebury answered with avengeance, netting the next eight goals in 8:45 to take an 8-1 lead with 18:50 remaining.
Alli Sciarretta started the run before Catherine Fowler found Mary O'Connellfor the one-goal lead. Bridget Instrum found the back of the net with an assist from Katie Ritter before converting a free position tally at the 23:37 mark to make it a 4-1 game. Hollis Perticone scored on a feed from Katie Ritter, who figured in her third-straight tally. O'Connell scored the next two, one on a free position and one on a feed from Laurel Pascal to give the Panthers a 7-1 lead at the 21:35 mark. Pascal closed the run, converting a feed from Instrum. Middlebury won five-straight draws during the pivotal run.
Hamilton answered with three-consecutive goals to make it an 8-4 game. O'Connell scored her fourth of the half with 18:50 remaining, converting a feed from Chrissy Ritter.
The game was delayed one hour due to lighting at the 12:02 mark of the first half. The Continentals netted the only goal following the delay, a tally from Fletcher with 13:51 remaining, as Middlebury led 9-5 at the break.
The halftime was significantly extended due to a second lightning delay. Following the break, Middlebury came out with four of the first five goals, forcing a Hamilton timeout. Pascal scored from Ritter before Caroline McCarthy answered for Hamilton to make it a 10-6 contest with 23:16 left to play. Instrum responded for the Panthers before Perticone scored from Megan Griffin and Katie Ritter from Pascal to give their team a 13-6 lead at the 19:45 mark.
A goal from McCarthy broke up the spurt before Instrum converted cutting to the middle. Griffin followed less than a minute later, giving her team a 15-7 advantage with 14:23 on the clock. The goals kept coming as Katie Ritter and Bea Eppler scored to give the Panthers a 17-7 lead, prompting a Hamilton timeout.
Fletcher responded for the Continentals out of the timeout before Hailey Cosseboom put Middlebury on top 18-8 with 6:37 remaining. Hamilton added two late goals to make it an 18-10 final.
O'Connell led the team with four goals on the day, while Katie Ritter scored three with three assists. Instrum added three goals and an assist, Pascal netted a pair with two helpers, while Perticone ended the day with two goals and one assist. Fowler earned a game-high seven draws, while Pascal won four. Chrissy Ritter and Delaina Smith each caused a pair of turnovers in the game. Katie Mandigo finished with five saves in goal to earn the win.
Fletcher's four goals led Hamilton, while McCarthy added three as Hannah Rubin made five saves in goal.
