Following two 7-2 road victories Saturday, the sixth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team improved to 11-2 in dual matches with a 7-0 NESCAC victory Sunday over visiting Connecticut College in a match played to decision inside Duke Nelson Recreation Center. The Panthers, who improve to 2-0 in league play, will remain at home for a 3:00 p.m. match Wednesday against #14 Williams.
Middlebury secured a 3-0 lead after doubles' play. The Panther tandem of Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell, ranked eighth regionally, secured the first point with an 8-0 victory over Jonathan Kraiger and Ben Sachs at #2, while the team of Chris Frost and William de Quant eased past Jonathan Deeter and Daniel Maffa 8-1 in the third spot. The region's third-ranked duo of Palmer Campbell and Peter Heidrich were pushed by Joshua Suneby and John Cangelosi in the top flight, but the Middlebury team earned a hard-fought 8-6 win.
In singles play, the Panthers lost a total of 12 games in the four straight-set victories that were completed. Smolyar improved to 22-2 this season as an individual with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Joshua Suneby at #1, while Jackson Frons clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Cangelosi in the second spot.
In the third flight, de Quant was victorious over Kraiger (6-2, 6-1), while Middlebury's Timo van der Geest picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win against Deeter in the fourth spot. With the match already decided, the final two singles matches went unfinished.
