Plymouth State plated six runs in the second inning on its way to an 8-4 victory over Middlebury in non-conference action on Forbes Field. Middlebury (4-20) wraps its season with back-to-back doubleheaders on the road at Bowdoin and Tufts this weekend, while Plymouth State (15-23) returns home for a Little East Conference doubleheader against Rhode Island College on Friday.

The visitors jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. After a one-out double by Paul Reny, Jarek Krajewski drove Reny in with an RBI single through the left side.

Middlebury responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame with four-straight hits to start the inning. Johnny Read lined the first pitch into center field for a base hit and moved to third on a single to right by Jason Lock. John Luke drove Read home with an RBI single to right and advanced to second on an error. Lock and Luke came around to score on a hard single up the middle by clean-up hitter Max Araya.

The six-run second inning was highlighted by five Plymouth State hits and two key Middlebury errors, as the visitors sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. The two miscues accounted for five unearned runs in the inning. Consecutive singles opened the frame as Ian Grimes loaded the bases when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed. Grimes made it a 3-2 game with an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Later, after Paul Reny was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dave Hall made it a 4-3 Plymouth advantage with a two run single to center with two out. With Reny on third, a passed ball allowed him to score as Hall reached third on the play. Jarek Krajewski knocked Hall in with an RBI double to left center, as Brian Thompson played Krajewski with a single to right for a 7-3 lead.

The scoring quieted for both teams until Plymouth State scratched a run across in the sixth when Krajewski plated Hall from third base with an RBI single to left.

While the hosts put runners in scoring position in the third and sixth innings, they came up empty against Plymouth State starter Ryan Perro. Middlebury made it an 8-4 game, scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth off a Plymouth state reliever. With one out, Araya reached on an infield single and Raj Palekar was hit by a pitch. Ryan Rizzo followed with a two-out single down the right field line that plated Araya for the 8-4 final.

Middlebury collected 13 hits, as Araya had three singles and two RBI to lead his team. Joe MacDonald and Rizzo also had a pair of singles. Dylan Takamori (1-1) pitched the first two innings for Middlebury, giving up seven runs (two earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts. Six relievers combined to hold the visitors to one run on nine hits, striking out four.

Krajewski had a big day at the dish, going 4-5, with a double, a run scored and three RBI for Plymouth State. Cam Ruziak and Justin Walsh added three hits apiece, as Reny went 2-4 with a double and scored two runs. Hall chipped in with two singles, two RBI and two runs scored, as the visitors collected 16 hits.

Perro (1-0) picked up the win for the visitors, pitching six innings, and allowed three runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts. Four Plymouth relievers shut out the hosts until the final frame, collecting three punch-outs over three innings.
