Baseball Scores 10 In the Ninth In Win at Skidmore

Middlebury broke open a 4-3 game with 10 runs in the ninth for a 14-4 non-league win at Skidmore on Castle Diamond. The Panthers return to action on Wednesday at home when they host Plymouth State with first pitch at 4:00 p.m.

Skidmore (11-20) took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first. Jeb Clarke singled and scored from first when Josh Brown's single went by a Middlebury outfielder. The Panthers (4-19) responded with three runs on four hits in the sixth to go up 3-1.

Skidmore scratched out another unearned run in its half of the sixth when Clark singled and later scored on a ground out. The Thoroughbreds tied it 3-3 in the seventh when Mike LaVita opened the inning with a walk and scored from second on an error on a bunt by Eric Damphousse.

Middlebury took a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Brendan Donohue was hit by a pitch to open the inning and eventually scored on a bases-loaded balk.

In the ninth, the Panthers sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits. Six of the runs came with two outs. Raj Palekar and Drew Coash hit back-to-back home runs to left field to account for the final four runs of the rally. Palekar's was a three-run shot, while Coash was a first-pitch rocket to almost the same spot.

Palekar finished 3-5 with a home run, a double, two runs and four RBI. Max Araya was 4-6 with two runs, two doubles, and an RBI. Coash, Donohue and Ryan Rizzo each had three hits in the game, as Coash scored three runs and drove in a pair.

Eric Truss pitched well in a no-decision for Middlebury. He went six innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Eddie DeArias (1-0) got the win in three innings of one-run relief.

Clarke was 3-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Brown went 2-5 to pace Skidmore. Ben Murphy started and allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk in 5.2 innings. Shankar Mani (1-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings of work.
