Box Score The Middlebury baseball team won its second-straight game as the Panthers picked up a 4-2 win over the College of St. Joseph on Forbes Field. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday with a pair of games at Trinity.
CSJ (28-28) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an unearned run. After Tommy Grant reached on an error, he was later driven in by a single to left by Colin McLeod.
Middlebury (3-17) answered with three in the bottom half of the inning, two earned. Joe MacDonald led off with a single to left, followed by a single to right by Jason Lock. Raj Palekar drove in MacDonald with a base hit to left, and moved to second on a fielding error in the outfield as Lock advanced to third. Johnny Read grounded out to short to plate Lock before Alex Deutsch has hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third. Brendan Donohue stepped up to the plate and drove in Palekar with a single to left field to make it a 3-1 game.
The Fighting Saints plated a run in the fourth as Will Hamson doubled to right center to lead off the inning. He later scored on a single to center by Colin Martin to make it a one-run game.
Middlebury added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Ryan Rizzo led off with a walk and was later thrown out at third on a single to center by Max Araya. Dylan Sinnickson followed and belted a double to left center to drive in Araya, making it a 4-2 game.
CSJ made some noise in the ninth, leaving the tying runs on base in a game that lasted just 2:01.
Dylan Takamori earned the win for the Panthers, allowing one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings of work. Tucker Meredith followed with a pair of scoreless innings, while Eddie DeArias retired three batters. Cooper Byrne came on in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Locke finished the day 3-4 at the dish with a run scored, while five other Panthers had hits.
Derek Osborne went the distance for CSJ, allowing three earned runs and nine hits over eight innings of work. McLeod paced the team at the plate with a 2-2 effort, driving in a run.
