Box Score Bridget Instrum scored a career-high six goals as third-ranked Middlebury completed its regular season with a 13-11 win over Williams (7-7, 3-7). The Panthers (12-2, 8-2) have earned the second seed for the NESCAC Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Amherst in a quarterfinal game this Saturday. The Ephs have earned the eighth seed and will visit top-seeded Trinity on Saturday.
Middlebury led 3-1 early behind a pair of goals from Instrum. Williams scored six of the game's next eight goals to hold a 7-5 advantage with 9:45 remaining in the opening half. Five different players scored for the Ephs, including Hillary Cook, who started and ended the run.
Middlebury answered with three straight to close the half holding an 8-7 lead. Megan Griffin scored on a quick-stick pass from Katie Ritter at 5:28, before Instrum converted a free position with a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal. Alli Sciarretta scored the final goal of the half with 20 seconds remaining, converting a free position. Williams keeper Margaret Draper made eight first-half saves to keep her team in the game, including several on free position attempts.
The teams exchanged the first six goals of the second half. Ritter scored driving to the goal before Cook did the same on the ensuring draw to make it a 9-8 game. Ritter struck again at 22:53, cutting to her left and scoring with a shot to the top right corner of the net.
Natalie Gill converted a feed from Nancy Palmer to bring the Ephs within one, before Instrum answered 23 seconds later to give the Panthers an 11-9 advantage. Becca Bell made it a one-goal game before Instrum answered once again, this time with a great spin move down low before finding the back of the net.
Middlebury finally was able to extend its lead to three when Griffin drove to the goal and scored to put her team on top, 13-10 with 6:22 remaining.
The Panthers were able to take some time off the clock before Williams took advantage of a turnover and cut the deficit to 13-11 at the 3:42 mark on a goal from Molly Belk. Middlebury's Catherine Fowler won the ensuing draw as the Panthers took more time off the clock en route to the win.
Ritter and Griffin each scored twice to aid the six-goal effort from Instrum. Fowler earned a game-high six draws, while Maggie Caputi picked up two ground balls and forced a pair of turnovers. Madeleine Kinker made some big second-half saves, finishing with six for the day.
Cook scored three to pace Williams, while Bell and Gill scored two apiece. Cook also won four draws, while Bridget Malicki had a goal, two assists, two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
