In a battle of top-10 opponents, the sixth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team ran its winning streak to six with an impressive 6-3 victory Sunday over #2 Emory in a match played on Middlebury's Proctor Tennis Courts. The Panthers, who move to a perfect 6-0 at home and 14-2 overall, return to the courts for a 2:00 p.m. NESCAC match Saturday at #8 Bowdoin.
Middlebury grabbed a 2-1 advantage following doubles' play. The Northeast region's sixth-ranked tandem of Palmer Campbell and Peter Heidrich put the hosts up 1-0 with an 8-3 victory in the top spot over Alex Ruderman and Ian Wagner, the Atlantic South's top-ranked team. The Eagle duo of Rafe Mosetick and David Omsky tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-2 victory at #3 against Chris Frost and William de Quant. In the swing match, Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell sent the hosts to individual play with a lead via an 8-5 win over Eric Halpern and Aman Manji.
In singles play that featured regionally-ranked players in numerous matches, Manji tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-4 win at #6 over Allen Jackson. In the fifth and top flights, de Quant and Smolyar gave the Panthers a 4-2 advantage, a lead they wouldn't relinquish. At #5, de Quant posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Josh Goodman. In the top flight, Smolyar, the region's top-ranked player, improved his record this season to 25-2, defeated the third-ranked player in Ruderman via scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Mosetick pulled the Eagles (12-5) to within one at 4-3, as he and Campbell battled in a three-set marathon at #3. Campbell won the first set in a tiebreaker by a 7-6 (7-5) score, but Mosetick was victorious in set two (7-5) and the decisive set (6-4).
The Panthers pulled out three-set wins in the final two matches on the courts. Jackson Frons clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 win over Wagner at #4, while Farrell completed the scoring as he came back after dropping the opening set in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Halpern.
