Box Score The Middlebury women's lacrosse team won its sixth-straight game as the fourth-ranked Panthers (6-1) earned a 14-8 road win at #9 Washington and Lee (7-2) on Watt Field. Middlebury returns to Vermont this weekend when it hosts #12 Amherst at 2:30 Saturday on Kohn Field.
The Panthers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening 9:15 of the game as four different players found the goal. The Generals cut it to 4-2 on a free position goal by Lauren Procaccino at 17:30, but Katie Ritter scored three goals and assisted on another tally as Middlebury carried an 8-3 lead into the intermission.
After Alli Sciarretta made it 9-3 on a free position shot at the 26:45 mark of the second half, W&L made a run at the Panthers, scoring five straight over a span of 10:08 to make it a one-goal game (9-8) with 16:37 remaining.
Maggie Waxter got the rally started at the 24:09 mark when she scored off an assist from Olivia Sisson. Sisson then found Procaccino for a goal at 22:59 and Sisson then scored on a free position shot 53 seconds later to make it 9-6 with 22:06 left. Procaccino scored at 20:16 and Melissa Coggins fed Sammy Yates for a goal at 16:37 that pulled the Generals within one goal (9-8).
However, the Panthers responded with a five-goal run to close the game in the final 13:04. Bridget Instrum scored two of the goals and Ritter capped the scoring with an empty net goal with 53 seconds remaining.
For the game, Middlebury edged W&L in shots (25-21) and in draw controls (13-11). Additionally, the Generals picked up 13 ground balls as opposed to the Panthers' 11.
Cara Mulligan suffered the loss for Washington and Lee, playing all 60 minutes and recording six saves. Madeleine Kinker saw the first 39:44 of action and logged four saves for Middlebury, while Katie Mandigo played the remaining 20:16 in goal and finished with three saves.
Procaccino paced the Blue and White with three goals and one assist, while Sisson scored one goal and dished out two assists.
Ritter's four-goal and two-assist effort was supplemented by three goals each from Instrum, Sciarretta and Laurel Pascal. The goals for Pascal were the 100th and 101st of her career, while Ritter's four scores also push her over the 100-goal plateau, now with 101. Pascal and Catherine Fowler each had four draw controls, while Pascal also caused two turnovers.
