Box Score The 13th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team saw a six-game winning streak snapped, falling to #2 RIT by a 21-11 score Wednesday evening at legendary Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Panthers (6-2), whose two losses this season have come against then #2 Tufts and RIT, return to action on Saturday at #12 Amherst at 1:00 p.m., while the Tigers (8-0) return to action on the same day against Bard.
In Wednesday's game, shots were 55-46 in favor of the Tigers, while RIT held a 42-33 ground ball edge, and cleared the ball 20-25 times.
Joey Zelkowitz led Middlebury with three goals, while Tim Giarrusso added a pair of goals. Jon Broome had a goal and three assists, while John Jackson won 21-35 face-offs and recorded a game-high 10 groundballs. Will Ernst took the loss in net for the Panthers, making 14 saves.
Allister Warren and Chad Levick each scored four goals for the Tigers, while Kyle Aquin had two goals and three assists. Ryan Lee tallied five points on three goals and two assists, and Kyle Sterzin and Eddie Kiesa each scored a pair of goals. Pat Johnston got the win in net, making 19 saves. Steven Ricci went 9-17 on draws, while Matt Hossack had a goal and an assist, caused three turnovers and had five ground balls.
RIT led 4-1 after the first quarter, and 11-4 at the half, thanks to a seven-goal outburst by the Tigers in the second quarter. RIT led 16-9 after the third quarter and cruised home in the fourth quarter for the 10-goal win.
Aquin, Warren, Sterzin and Levick each scored for RIT in the first stanza, including three straight to end the quarter. After Middlebury scored back-to-back goals, the Tigers rattled off five straight, taking a 9-3 lead on Levick's goal off a feed from Sterzin with 3:34 to play in the opening half.
Middlebury scored the first two goals of the third quarter and cut the RIT lead to 12-9, but the Tigers answered with five-straight goals, taking a 17-9 lead on Levick's goal off a feed from Hossack late in the third quarter. The Tigers scored four goals in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
It was the first win for RIT over Middlebury in three games in the all-time series between the two schools, as the Tigers are now unbeaten in their last 32 regular-season games.
