The third-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team improved to 4-0 for the season with a pair of wins Saturday in southern California to begin its spring break trip. The Panthers opened up their week with a 6-3 win over Chapman before easing past Biola via a 7-2 tally later in the evening.
Middlebury opened by dropping two of the three doubles matches against Chapman (5-6). The lone point came from the #1 team of Palmer Campbell and Peter Heidrich by an 8-2 score.
In singles play, Ari Smolyar, Noah Farrell and Campbell posted victories in the top-three slots. Smolyar battled back from a set down for the win (3-6, 6-4, 6-2), while Farrell (6-3, 6-3) and Campbell (6-3, 7-6 (3)) both cruised to straight-set wins. Jackson Frons (6-1, 6-1) and Allen Jackson (6-3, 6-0) were victorious at #5 and #6, respectively.
Against Biola, the Panthers swept the doubles points. Chris Frost and William de Quant picked up an 8-5 win in the top spot, Heidrich and Kyle Schlanger posted a 9-7 victory in the second slot and Timo van der Geest and Charlie Oberrender were victors at #3, 8-6.
During singles action, de Quant cruised by a 6-2, 6-3 score in the top flight. Biola picked up its two points of the match at #2 and #3, respectively. Frost posted a 6-4, 6-1 win at #4, Schlanger blanked his opponent at #5 (6-0, 6-0) and Jack Welch fought back after losing the first set for a 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 win in the sixth spot.
