Box Score Middlebury scored four of the game's final five goals on its way to an 11-10 win over eighth-ranked Endicott (5-2) on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. The Panthers (5-1) have now won five straight after a loss to top-ranked Tufts in the season opener. Middlebury returns to action when it hosts Bowdoin on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., while the Gulls host Salve Regina on the same day.
It was a game of runs early on, as the Panthers took a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in less than a minute. Jack Rautiola put the team up 1-0 at the 9:30 mark with a man-up goal on a feed from Joel Blockowicz. Sean Carroll made it a 2-0 game with a quick-stick goal on a nice feed from David Murray.
Endicott responded by scoring the game's next six goals to take a 6-2 lead with 8:14 remaining in the second quarter. Tied at 2-2 in the second quarter, a man-up goal from Nick Pinciaro and a pair from Harrison Cotter gave the Gulls a 5-2 advantage with 9:57 on the clock. Pinciaro converted a two-on-one from point-blank range after a dish from Ian Knechtle to put his team on top 6-2 at the 8:14 mark.
Middlebury answered with a four-goal spurt to tie the game at 6-6. Blockowicz opened the scoring before a pair from Jack Cleary and Joey Zelkowitz 17 seconds apart made it a 6-5 game. Cleary scored rolling to his right while Zelkowitz hit the back of the net on a quick-stick shot after a feed from Jon Broome. Tim Giarrusso later tied the game before Kyle Weber gave Endicott a 7-6 lead at the intermission with a goal at the 1:19 mark.
Giarrusso struck again to open the third quarter, with a quick shot into the back of the net after a pass from Rautiola. Endicott's Colin Bannon and Weber broke the tie with a pair of tallies to give the Gulls a 9-7 advantage with 8:02 remaining. Middlebury had a golden opportunity to come within a goal at the 7:13 mark, but could not take advantage of a six-on-four man advantage for 60 seconds.
Middlebury found some offense late in the third quarter with two goals in the final minute, just 29 seconds apart, knotting the game at 9-9. Giarrusso ripped a shot into the back of the net with another solid feed from Broome, before Broome scored a goal of his own, wrap-around style, with 10 seconds remaining.
Goals were hard to come by in the fourth quarter, despite many opportunities. Carroll gave Middlebury its first lead since 2-1 when he scored rolling left off a pick to give the Panthers at 10-9 lead at the 11:56 mark.
Cotter scored his third of the day for the Gulls with 7:07 remaining, rolling to his left before finding the back of the cage. The Gulls looked to tie the game in the fourth minute with a flurry of shots, but Panther keeper Will Ernst made a big save on Bannon, while a second shot was blocked to preserve the 10-10 tie.
On the other end of the field, Middlebury scored the game-winner with 3:26 remaining. Blockowicz fed Rautiola, scoring from the left side with a rocket to the top-right corner of the net. Middlebury won the ensuing face-off with another ground ball pickup from Cal Williams. The Panthers nearly increased their lead with a couple great looks, but Giarrusso was denied by Endicott goalie Cameron Bell before Blockowicz picked up the ground ball and rifled a shot that hit the crossbar.
Endicott had the ball in the Panther zone with 46 seconds remaining before calling a timeout. A shot from Pinciaro hit the side of the net, as Ernst picked up the ground ball. Middlebury's clearing attempt failed as the Gulls came right back at the Panther net. Cotter's lefty shot was saved by Ernst, before Pinciaro picked up the rebound and was again denied by Ernst with time winding down, as Middlebury held on for the victory.
Middlebury possessed a 44-35 advantage in shots, led 37-26 in ground balls, while winning 15-25 face-offs. John Jackson finished 15-23 in the X to lead the Panthers. Giarrusso's three goals led Middlebury, with two from Rautiola and Carroll. Blockowitz had a goal and two assists, as did Broome. Williams earned a team-high seven ground balls, while Harrison Goodkind picked up four. Ernst finished with nine saves in goal to earn the win.
Cotter's three goals paced the Gulls, with two apiece from Weber and Pinciaro. Knechtle earned seven ground balls, Weber picked up five, while Tommy Hughes was 10-25 in face-offs.
