Panthers Take to the Pool on the Road at Amherst

The Panther swimming and diving teams hit the road for a dual meet against Amherst at Pratt Pool. The women fell by a 177.5-111.5 count, while the men were defeated 173.5-111.5. Middlebury will complete first-semester competition next Saturday when it hosts Springfield for a dual meet beginning at 1:00 p.m.

During the men's competition, the Middlebury quartet of Paul Lagasse, Jack McLaughlin, Brendan Leech and Bryan Cheuk touched the wall first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:14.04. The team of Taylor Moore, Alex Smith, Jack Dowling and David Keyes finished second in the event (3:23.83).

Individually, Michael McGean picked up two victories in the distance freestyle events. He tied Amherst's Connor Haley for first in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:54.51, while he cruised by 7.45 seconds to the title in the 500 free (4:50.94). Connor McCormick also posted a win in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:04.03.

Runner-up efforts in the pool were tallied by Cheuk in the 100 free (48.84), Leech in the 200 backstroke (2:02.84) and Andrew Grant in the 200 IM (2:05.66). Will Greene recorded a second-place showing on the 1-meter boardwith209.25 points.

On the women's side, Isabel Wyer was a part of two victories. She swam to the wall ahead of the field as an individual in the 200 free (1:55.45), while she teamed with Morgan Burke, Megan Griffin and Stephanie Andrews for the 400 free relay title in 3:41.96.

Other individual event wins came from Grace Stimson during the 200 IM (2:14.77), while Elissa DeNunzio won the 3-meter diving competition (198.00) and was second on the 1-meter board (188.63).

In the first event of the meet, the 200 medley relay quartet of Wyer, Liza MacCowatt, Griffin and Burke (1:50.50) finished second, while the 400 free relay team of Kristin Karpowicz, Sarah Bartholomae, Caroline Kelly and Margaret Pollack was also second with a time of 3:49.35.

Madeline Pierce recorded a second-place swim in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:15.87.
