The Middlebury men's tennis team ended its fall season at the two-day Boston Invitational hosted by Tufts. The invitational featured players from Boston University, Harvard, MIT, Colby, Tufts and Middlebury. There was no champion crowned or a bracket contested as individuals and doubles tandems played in a round robin format.
In singles action, five Middlebury participants including Ari Smolyar, Palmer Campbell, William de Quant, Allen Jackson and Cole Sutton each posted a perfect 3-0 record. Smolyar, Campbell and Sutton tallied each win in straight sets, while de Quant and Jackson both needed a third set during Sunday's play for an unblemished record.
Also going undefeated for the weekend were Jack Welch and Noah Farrell. Welch was 2-0 posting a straight-set win on Saturday and a three-set victory Sunday, while Farrell defeated Harvard's Xavier Gonzalez (6-4, 6-2) on Saturday in his lone singles match.
Also picking up individual victories for the Panthers with 2-1 records were Kyle Schlanger, Peter Martin and Timo van der Geest. Overall, the Panthers posted a 22-7 combined record during singles play.
During doubles play, the Middlebury duo of Campbell and de Quant recorded a 3-0 mark. Smolyar and Farrell earned two wins as a part of Saturday's play but lost in Sunday's action for a 2-1 showing. Additionally, the teams of Hamid Derbani and Schlanger along with Martin and Sutton both went 1-1.
The invitational concludes the fall portion of the season for Middlebury. The Panthers will open the spring schedule with a pair of home dual matches on Saturday, March 12 against Skidmore at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m. with NESCAC foe Hamilton.
