Head Coach Bob Hansen was named the NESCAC Coach of the Year, and five members of the Middlebury College men's tennis squad have been selected to the All-NESCAC teams. Sophomore Palmer Campbell (Nashville, Tenn.) earned first-team honors in doubles along with his playing partner in senior Brantner Jones (Winnetka, Ill.). Senior Alex Johnston (Leeds, England) was a first-team singles honoree and second-team doubles recipient along with his partner in senior Andrew Lebovitz (Weston, Mass.). Sophomore Ari Smolyar (Short Hills, N.J.) picked up second-team laurels in singles. Hansen and the rest of the third-ranked Panthers are preparing to host an NCAA Division III Regional this weekend on campus.
Hansen, in his third year as head coach, guided the Panthers to an 18-3 overall record and a #3 national ranking. Hansen guided Middlebury to 11-straight wins late in the season to earn the squad the top seed for the recent NESCAC Tournament.
Playing at #2 doubles, Campbell and Jones were winners of the USTA/ITA Small College National Tennis Doubles Championship last fall. As a duo, the pair combined to post a mark of 30-9 record overall, including a 17-4 mark this spring. Jones was a 2013 second-team all-conference player in singles, a 2012 first-team recipient in singles and a 2011 first-team all-NESCAC honoree in doubles.
In the top of the Middlebury singles lineup, Johnston went 17-13 against the opponent's top player. Paired with Lebovitz at #1 doubles, the duo tallied a mark of 21-12. He was selected to the first-team all-league teams in both singles and doubles last spring. Lebovitz picks up his second post-season honor, as he was selected to the first-team with Johnston a season ago.
Smolyar picks up his first all-conference nod. Logging time in the middle of the Middlebury lineup, Smolyar tallied an impressive 23-4 record, including an eight-match winning streak late in the spring.
