Box Score 2 Tufts, the ninth-ranked team in the nation, took a pair from Middlebury on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon at Forbes Field. The Jumbos, hosts of next weekend's NESCAC baseball tournament, improve to 30-5 overall, while the Panthers end their season at 5-24. Tufts took game one by a 6-0 score, and won the second half of the twinbill, 10-1.
In the opener, after scratching single runs across in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead, the Jumbos broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs. In that frame, Max Frecchia opened with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Tufts' designated hitter Kevin Godin followed with an infield single, as Frecchia was forced to stay at second. After Nick Cutsumpas' fly-out to right pushed both runners up a base, Oscar Kutch slapped a two-out single up the middle, scoring Frecchia and Godin, giving Tufts a 4-0 lead. After allowing a walk to the number-nine hitter in Tom Petry, Panther starter Cooper Byrne (1-5) was pulled for reliever Eddie DeArias.
DeArias opened with a wild-pitch to Connor McDavitt, letting both runners advance 90 feet. McDavitt smacked a 2-1 offering off DeArias through the box for a two-RBI single, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead.
Tufts starting pitcher Christian Sbily (5-0) was strong through six innings, allowing only two runners past first base. In the seventh, Sbily got himself into a jam after Panther pinch-hitter Steven Bodine reached on an error. Charlie Boardman followed with a pinch-hit down down the left-field line, moving Bodine to third. Sbily ended the threat, enticing Alex Kelly to foul out to end the game.
Godin went 2-2 with a double for Tufts, scoring two runs and drawing a pair of walks. Kutch added three RBI and scored a run on one hit, while McDavitt added two RBI and a run scored. Sbily went seven innings for the win, scattering five hits and striking out six.
Four different Panthers had singles, as Boardman's pinch-hit double was Middlebury's lone extra-base hit. Byrne took the loss, tossing the opening 5.2 innings. He allowed six earned runs with one punchout and four walks, while DeArias tossed the final 1.1 innings, striking out one and walking two.
In the nightcap, Tufts opened the game with two runs in the first. After McCallum drew a one-out walk, a misplay on a Wade Hauser bunt allowed McCallum to reach third as Hauser raced to second base on the miscue. After a sacrifice fly by Freccia scored McCallum and moved Hauser to third, Matt Moser followed with an RBI single to right-center, plating Hauser.
The Jumbos added a run in the third, chasing Middlebury starter Logan Mobley. The visitors blew the game open in the fifth, scoring five more runs for a commanding 8-0 lead.
Tufts big inning began with back-to-back doubles by Hauser and Freccia. Trailing 4-0, Mark Dickerson relieved Sawyer Olson, who pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning after stepping in for Mobley.
Moser singled off of Dickerson's first offering to left-center, allowing Freccia to reach third. Godin followed with a three-run homer to left-center on an 0-2 pitch for a 7-0 lead. After Bryan Egan was hit by a Dickerson pitch, Kutch doubled to right center, but overran the base and was tagged out on the play as Egan reached third. Eagan later scored on an infield put-out for an 8-0 advantage.
Tufts added an unearned run off Middlebury reliever Dylan Takamori in the sixth for a 9-0 lead. Jumbo starting pitcher Andrew David nursed a one-hitter going into the bottom of the frame, but the Panthers cobbled a pair of hits around a fielding error for their first run of the game.
Boardman opened the bottom of the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a David wild pitch. A double-play on a Greg Sigelbaum foul-out sent Boardman to the bench. With two outs, Ryan Rizzo reached first on a fielding error. Alex Kelly, in his final at-bat for the Panthers, knocked Rizzo home with an RBI double, giving Middlebury its lone run.
After Edmund Murphy relieved Takamori to begin the seventh, Tufts added its final run on a four-pitch, base-loaded walk. Calvin McEathron replaced Murphy on the mound and got the final two outs for the Panthers.
Leading 10-1, Speros Varinos relieved David in the bottom of the seventh. After two quick outs, Varinos walked a batter and hit another, before striking out Boardman to end the game.
David (4-2) earned the win for Tufts, tossing six strong innings, giving up three hits. In the game, he allowed one unearned run, struck out three and didn't allow a walk as he faced the minimum through five innings. Varinos pitched the seventh, walking one and striking out a pair. Freccia went 2-3 with a double and three RBI, while Godin also added three RBI on his homer. Moser was 2-4 with an RBI, as Hauser and Kutch each collected a double.
Kelly went 1-3 as his RBI double gives him 27 two-baggers for his career. He finishes his time donning the blue and white jersey with a .348 batting average (149-428) to go along with 45 RBI in 116 games.
Johnny Read and Boardman had the other two hits for Middlebury in game two. Mobley (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, over three innings. Olsen, Dickerson and Takamori all followed, each tossing an inning. Murphy recorded one out in the seventh, while McEathron capped the game getting the final two outs.
