Playing in its regular season finale with NESCAC postseason seeding up for grabs, the eighth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team posted its 10th-straight win by a 6-3 score at #28 Tufts. The Panthers improved to 17-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the conference, while Tufts slips to 9-8 and 4-6. Both teams will now get ready for the 2014 NESCAC Championships from May 2-4 hosted by Bowdoin.
The match was moved indoors to the Hirsh Tennis Center due to weather. The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles play. The first point for the Panthers came from the #2 doubles team of Brantner Jones and Palmer Campbell, who defeated Brad Wong and Brian Tan, 8-3. At #1, the pair of Alex Johnston and Andrew Lebovitz eased past the Jumbo duo of Jay Glickman and Benjamin Battle, 8-4.
The win for the Jumbos came at #3 doubles, as Austin Blau and Nick Cary edged the Middlebury duo of Peter Heidrich and Ari Smolyar, 9-7.
In singles play, the visitors earned their four respective points in straight sets. Smolyar was the first to finish at #4 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Blau, while Johnston gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead when he earned a 6-4, 6-2 win against Glickman in the top flight.
Tan pulled the hosts to within two at 4-2 when he picked up a three-set win at #3 against Campbell (7-6 (7-3),1-6, 6-3), but Jones clinched the match, rebounding from a set down for a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win against Wong at #2.
The teams split the final two matches of the day. Middlebury's Courtney Mountifield earned a 6-1, 6-3 win in the fifth slot over Zach Ladwig, while Cary rounded out the scoring for Tufts with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jackson Frons at #6.
