Baseball Wins Two Of Three

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

The Panther baseball team won two of three games over a two-day stretch in Tucson, Arizona. Middlebury earned its first win of the year by thumping Cal Tech 17-2 on March 24th. The following day after dropping a tough 4-3 game to Carthage, the team rebounded with a 15-13 victory over Lawrence.

Middlebury (2-4) scored four runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth on its way to the 17-2 victory over Cal Tech (1-17). Cooper Byrne earned the win on the mound, allowing just three hits and one earned run over seven innings of work.

Alex Kelly led the team at the plate with a 4-5 effort, scoring four runs. Jason Lock finished 3-6 with a triple and four RBI, while Garrett Werner went 3-4 with a homer and three runs scored.

Carthage (6-4) broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the ninth to defeat the Panthers on March 25th. An infield single scored the run with two outs in the final frame.

A two-run home to left center by John Luke in the second inning gave Middlebury a 2-1 lead. The Panthers scored their other run in the fourth inning, with a bases loaded walk by Joe MacDonald.

Carthage added singles runs in the fifth and sixth before plating the game-winner in the ninth.

Jake Stalcup suffered the loss in relief, with starter Dylan Kane allowing one earned run over six innings of work. Lock and Cullen Coleman each went 2-4 at the dish.

Against Lawrence, the Panthers scored in each of the first five innings including a six-run fourth inning. Lawrence answered each time scoring four in the first, two in the second, single tallies in the third and fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Middlebury led by just one at 12-11 after seven innings. In the top of the eighth, the Panthers tacked on three insurance runs on just two hits and were aided by a Lawrence miscue.

In the home half of the frame, Lawrence scored twice and pulled to within two, 15-13. However, Middlebury's Mark Dickerson worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save of the spring.

Ryan Rizzo went 4-6 at the plate for Middlebury with four runs scored and two RBI. The Panthers pounded out a season-best 16 hits in the win.

On the hill, Eddie DeArias picked up the win with 2.2 innings of relief work. Phil Clark was saddled with the loss for Lawrence going 6.0 innings giving up 12 runs, just three earned, on 14 hits and struck out three.
