Big Third Period Lifts Men's Hockey Past St. Michael's

Box Score

Middlebury scored four third period goals on its way to a 6-2 win over St. Michael's at the 21st Middlebury College Holiday Classic. The Panthers (4-3-2) will take on Neumann, who advanced via shootout after a 2-2 tie with Southern Maine, in the finals on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Purple Knights (0-8-1) will meet the Huskies in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.

Following a scoreless first period, Middlebury took a 1-0 lead just 3:53 into the second. Derek Pimentel fed a pass to George Ordway, who scored from the left wing with a shot to the short side for his second of the year.

St. Michael's tied the game 14:09 into the second with some nice individual moves by Josh Dickman, cutting through several players on his way to the goal. Middlebury took a 2-1 lead with 39 seconds left in the period when Jake Charles scored with a wrister from the high slot on the power play.

The Panthers gained some breathing room early in the third period with a pair of goals 1:19 apart. Louis Belisle took advantage of a neutral zone turnover with a great move breaking to the goal to put his team on top 3-1 just 1:57 into the period. The lead grew to 4-1 with the first of the year from Matt Silcoff, who scored on a rebound on the doorstep after a shot from the right point by Ronald Fishman had been saved.

Panther goaltender Nick BonDurant kept the three-goal lead intact 5:45 into the third, with a save on Dickman before denying Ryan Arsenault with a great pad stop.

St. Michael's Kevin Altidor cut the lead to 4-2 before the Panthers added two more goals. Mike Najjar and Cameron Romoff both scored their second of the year to round out the scoring.

Middlebury finished the game with a 48-16 shots advantage, as Nick BonDurant made 14 saves in goal. Dave Donzanti (54:58 MP, 6 GA, 41 saves) and Michael Comitini (5:02 MP, 0 GA, 1 save) both saw time for St. Michael's.
