The fourth-seeded Middlebury men's ice hockey team cut its deficit to one on two occasions in pursuit of a comeback bid, but sixth-seeded Williams held on to secure a 4-2 win in the NESCAC Championship on Sunday afternoon in Clinton, New York.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers had an early look on goal 3:20 into the matchup. Dimitri Tzaferis dialed up a bid from the blue line that thumped off the pad of Eph goalie Harrison Fogel.
- Williams moved in front with 13:30 left in the first session. Logan Valkama won a race to a loose puck on the boards and dashed down the ice, finding the top-left corner to establish the 1-0 advantage.
- Heinze denied an excellent scoring chance with 3:02 remaining. Gates Omicioli gathered the puck on a breakaway and lifted a rising attempt that the netminder blocked with his left shoulder.
- Valkama struck again with the extra skater 21 seconds before the frame expired, collecting a rebound and tucking a look under the crossbar to establish a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.
- Luc Malkhassian tested the waters 15 ticks into the second period, navigating through traffic and taking aim at the top-right corner. Fogel gloved the riser to keep the navy and white off the board.
- Less than a minute later, Heinze raised his stick to keep a strong chance from Wilson Farrow at the blue line out of the net.
- Tyler Wishart sliced the deficit to one (2-1) with 14:34 showing in the frame, camping out on the doorstep and redirecting a bid from Jake Stevens over the line.
- Ryan Kearney restored Williams' two-goal lead with 11:40 expired, firing a crisp bid from the right-side boards that tucked into the upper-left corner.
- Caden Morgan nearly parried the goal 43 seconds later, receiving a feed from Wishart between the circles and flicking a wrister that Fogel stopped.
- Middlebury turned up the pressure late, forcing seven denials from Fogel to maintain the 3-1 score through 40 minutes. The Panthers had their best chance with 56 seconds left when Dante Palombo attempted a quick shot in front that narrowly missed high before bouncing back into the crease and being covered by Fogel.
- With 1:09 gone in the third, David Vieten broke through on the left side and eyed the top-left corner but his chance bounded off Heinze's right shoulder.
- The Middlebury goaltender made three critical saves over 12 seconds to spark a transition down the ice at the 10:54 mark. The Panthers sliced the deficit back to one (3-2) just 49 seconds later as Morehouse faked and fired from the left faceoff circle into the right side of the net.
- Simon Gaul gave the Ephs a key insurance goal with 17:33 elapsed. The forward darted down the ice to meet a bouncing puck, tapping a shot toward the post that crawled over the line to seal the eventual 4-2 decision.
