Baseball Tops Hamilton In 12-Inning Affair

Middlebury plated a run in the bottom of the 12th inning, picking up an 8-7 win over Hamilton (9-15, 2-4) in the series finale. The Panthers (6-11, 3-6) win the series 2-1 after splitting a pair of games on Forbes Field on Saturday. The two teams combined for 15 runs, 31 hits and 24 runners left on base Sunday, using five pitchers apiece.

Hamilton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Gabe Klein doubled in Zachary Becker. Middlebury answered with RBI singles from Max Araya and Garrett Werner to take a 2-1 lead in the second.

The Continentals took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the third inning. Colin Henneberger drove in a run with an RBI single, before Klein scored from third on a double steal as Henneberger advanced to second. Stephen LaRochelle later drove in Henneberger to give his team the 4-2 advantage.

Hamilton added a run in the fourth to go up 5-2 before Middlebury scored three in the bottom of the inning. Araya walked and scored on an RBI double down the right field line by Alex Kelly. Andrew Lind singled and later scored on an RBI single through the right side by Hunter Merryman. Tom Rafferty drove in Kelly with an RBI single to center to knot the game at 5-5.

Hamilton regained the lead with an unearned run in the sixth, with Middlebury tying it up in the seventh on a triple from Dylan Sinnickson and a bad-hop infield single by Michael Morris

The Panthers took a 7-6 lead in the eighth after Werner walked and was driven in on a double to right center by Kelly. Hamilton rallied in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7. Henneberger singled, stole second and moved to third on an errant throw. He later scored an unearned run when he was driven in on a single to right center by LaRochelle.

Middlebury had  runners on third in the 9th and 11th innings, but were unable to score the game-winner. With two outs in the 12th, Kelly reached on a fielding error, while Merryman followed with a single to right center. Kelly was headed for third and advanced to score the game-winner as the ball was bobbled in the outfield.

John Popkowski (1-0) picked up the win in relief, throwing three innings of no-hit ball. Sinnickson finished 5-6 with a triple, while Merryman was 3-7 . Kelly, Morris and Lind each added two hits in the game.

Ryan Crawford (0-3) suffered the loss, despite 3.2 innings of effective relief, allowing just one unearned run and four hits. Klein and Henneberger each went 3-6 for the Continentals, while LaRochelle and Sam Fuentes each had a pair of hits.
