Baseball Goes 5-4 In Arizona - Prepares For Williams

The Middlebury baseball team opened up its season in Chandler, Arizona with a 7-5 loss to Carthage on March 24. Tyler Wark went 3-4 with two runs scored in the game, while Will Baine was 2-4 with a double and two RBI. Michael Joseph took the loss, tossing a complete game with eight innings of work.

The Panthers picked up their first win of the season later that day, topping Hamline 9-8 in 11 innings. Sean McQuillan plated Matt Wassel in the bottom of the 11th with a single to right to win it. Dirk vanDuym earned the win in relief with one inning of work. Michael Morris finished the game 4-6 with a double, while Zach Roeder was 3-6 with a double. Thomas Rafferty and Dan Andrada each had two hits in the contest.

Middlebury fell 11-7 to Gustavus Adolphus on the 25th. Roeder was 3-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI, Rafferty went 2-3, while Thomas Driscoll scored three runs. Andy Dittrich took the loss in 1.1 innings of work.

Middlebury split with Thomas on the 26th, falling 13-2 in game one before rebounding with a 14-5 victory in the nightcap. Thomas scored 11 runs through the middle innings on its way to the game one win. Roeder tripled for Middlebury as Matt Leach suffered the loss in five innings of work.

In game two, Morris went 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored while Cooper Byrne picked up the victory with five innings of work. Driscoll finished the game 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, Baine scored four runs, while Roeder was 2-4. Hunter Merryman ended the game 2-3 with a double and four runs driven in, while Wassel went 2-4 with three RBI.

Middlebury took two from Lewis & Clark on March 27th, 9-5 and 15-4. Dittrich earned the win in relief in game one as the Panthers scored five in the sixth inning. Driscoll went 2-4 with two runs scored, while Dylan Sinnickson was 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Morris, Wassel and Wark each had two hits in the game.

The second game saw vanDuym earn his second win with five innings of work as the Panthers scored in all but one inning. Baine finished the game 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, Alex Kelly went 3-3 with three runs scored, while Wassel was 3-5 with three runs scored. Sinnickson had a 3-4 game with three RBI and two runs scored, while Morris, Merryman and Wark each had a pair of hits.

Middlebury dropped game one of a two-game set with Oberlin on the 28th, falling 11-4. Kelly finished 2-4 at the plate, while Andrew Lind doubled and Baine tripled. Eddie DeArias took the loss with three innings of work.

The Panthers scored twice in the eighth to earn an 8-6 win in game two. Dittrich moved to 2-1 with the win in relief, while Logan Mobley picked up a save. Driscoll paced the offense with a 3-5 game, hitting a triple and scoring twice. Morris was 2-3, Andrada went 2-2 with a double, while Wassel was 2-3 in the game.

The Panthers return to action when they take on Williams in a NESCAC West series in Arizona on Friday and Saturday.
