Entering the bottom of the eighth inning with a slight 2-1 lead over visiting Middlebury, the nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State baseball team came out swinging and added seven more runs to its total. Casey Mohrien shut the Panthers out at the plate in the eighth and ninth innings to earn his first save of the season and help secure a 9-1 victory for teammate and starting pitcher for the Cardinals, Matt Seymour.

Plattsburgh improves to 25-6, while Seymour is now 2-0 for the season. Middlebury drops to 6-11 overall. John Wiet (0-3) suffered the loss for the Panthers.

The Cardinals crossed the plate first in the fourth inning. Donny Coolidge singled through the right side to drive in Tory Bouyea from second base. Bouyea had led off the inning with a double to left center. Plattsburgh scored once more in the sixth before Middlebury finally answered back in the seventh when Will Baine crushed an RBI-triple to center field.

In the eighth inning, Plattsburgh racked up nine hits, including a double by Danny Roeser, and plated seven runs, all earned, to solidify its lead.

Seymour pitched seven innings for Plattsburgh, allowing five hits and one earned run. He sat down three batters and walked four. Mohrien took to the mound in the eighth inning, faced seven batters, gave up four hits and struck out one.

Crockett Pack was a powerhouse at the plate for Plattsburgh, going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, a walk and a run. Bouyea, Roeser and Pat Shaughnessy all had two hits for the Cardinals, including one double apiece.

Donald McKillop, Erich Enns and Peter Baumann each went 2-4 for the Panthers.
