Men's Tennis Dominates ITAs

The Panther men's tennis team turned in some impressive results at the ITA Championships hosted by Williams. Middlebury players captured both the singles and doubles championships, earning both finalists spots in the singles bracket. Champions advance to the 2009 ITA National Small College Championships, hosted by the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama from October 15-18.

In singles play, junior Andrew Peters (Baltimore, Md.) captured the title, defeating teammate Andrew Thomson (W. Bloomfield, Mich.), 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Peters earned five straight-set victories at the tourney, before emerging as the champion with a hard-fought three-set battle against Thomson.

Senior Andrew Lee (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also enjoyed success in singles play, winning three straight-set matches, before falling to Peters in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Peter Odell (Scarsdale, N.Y.) won a pair of matches before being eliminated in the round of 16.

In doubles play, Thomson/Lee came away with the tournament title, picking up an 8-5 win in the finals of the 32-team bracket. The duo cruised to 8-3, 8-3, 8-2 and 8-4 wins before coming away with the crown. Peters and senior Chris Mason (Owings Mills, Md.) picked up a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals, where they fell 8-5.
