Field Hockey Opens With Loss To Tufts

Middlebury and Tufts both opened up their seasons today on Middlebury College's Kohn Field, as the Jumbos emerged with a 3-1 win. Tufts, who advanced to both the NESCAC and NCAA Finals a year ago, moves to 1-0 on the year, while the Panthers fall to 0-1.

The Jumbos threatened early as Margi Scholtes hit the post before Becca Shaw denied Tamara Brown on a fast break. The Jumbos broke through at 17:32 as Brown scored on a penalty corner. The Panthers came back in the second half as Lauren Greer scored her first career goal, after a quick feed from Heather McCormack in transition. Tufts took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute, as Jess Perkins scored from the top of the circle on a penalty corner. The Jumbos sealed the game late with a tally from Lindsay Griffith in transition.

Marianna Zak ended the day with four saves to earn the win, while Shaw made five stops for the Panthers. Tufts held a 17-6 shots advantage on the day, while Middlebury led by an 8-4 margin in penalty corners.
