Senior Sally Hatfield (Barrington, R.I.) and sophomore Virginia Shannon (Hanover, N.H.) represented the Middlebury women at the recent individual nationals hosted by Williams. Hatfield earned a 3-2 record over the weekend, while Shannon went 4-1. Hatfield ends the season with an 18-12 overall record, while Shannon ends '08-'09 with a 17-13 mark. Hatfield was also a first-team All-NESCAC selection, while head coach John Illig was named the NESCAC Coach of the year.
Illig, in just his second year as head coach, led the team to a 13th-place finish at team nationals last week, the team's highest finish in the past 10 years. He also helped guide the team to a school record 19 wins against just eight losses.
