Men's Hockey Holds On For Tie With USM

The University of Southern Maine came from a 4-0 deficit to earn a 4-4 road tie at Middlebury in the Panthers' home-opener. Both teams return to action on Saturday when Middlebury hosts the University of New England and Southern Maine visits Williams.

Middlebury took a 1-0 lead 6:05 into the game as Nick Resor scored from just outside the crease, tipping in a shot sent in by John Sullivan. The Panthers made it a 2-0 game at 17:41, as Charles Nerbak scored from the point on the power play, with Mathieu Castonguay and Sullivan earning assists.

Leading 2-0 after one, Martin Drolet broke in on the right wing and wristed a shot to the near side top corner of the net. Tucker Donahoe made it a 4-0 game just 58 seconds later with a shot through the five-hole breaking to the goal.

Southern Maine answered only nine seconds later, as Dan Rautenberg scored on a rebound after a shot from Chris Travis had been saved. The Huskies kept coming, cutting the lead to 4-2 at 14:51, as Zach Joy took advantage of a turnover, scoring with a snapper from the right wing.

Southern Maine made it a one-goal game just 43 seconds into the third, as Joy and Jon Rutt worked a nice two-on-one in transition, with Joy finishing with a redirection. The Huskies made it all the way back at 5:05, tying the game with a blast from the point by Paul Conter.

Neither team scored through the remainder of regulation, forcing the game into overtime. Middlebury went on a power play with 46 seconds remaining, which carried over into overtime, but was not successful. The best chance to score came with 14 seconds left in the extra session, when Koray Celik (30 saves) made a big glove save on Middlebury's Mathieu Dubuc. The Panthers ended the game with a 34-25 shots advantage, as John Yanchek made 21 saves between the pipes.
